Minnesota was initially occupied by people from some parts of Mississippi, Northern Woodlands and Western Prairies years ago. Periods after,
the population of the place expanded, and in the 16th to 17th century, most of the people inhabiting the state were the Dakota or Sioux,
Ojibway, and Winnebago.
The Beginning of Rochester
Through an 1853 agreement between the Dakota or Sioux Indians and the National Government, Rochester began to be a part of Minnesota. It wasn’t
already named Rochester that time. After the Sioux Indians abandoned it, the city began to be stop for a stagecoach line. This was the Dubuque trail which acts as means of transportation from St. Paul to Dubuque, Iowa.
After a year from the 1853 treaty on July 12, the Head family with their father George Head occupied the piece of land that would later become the
central business district of Rochester. Mr. Head decided to name the city Rochester in honor of his hometown Rochester in New York. Through this, he always feels that he is home.
Through the 1855 territorial parliament, Olmsted County was created. Rochester began to be the government central town of the Olmsted County and was declared as a city on August 5th, three years after. The city continued to grow in the number of its occupants. In fact, in 1860, there were already 1,424 residents in the area after Mr. Head’s arrival in Rochester’s central business district. After 20 years, the city became a regional urban center with a total number of 5,103 residents.
The Origin of Rochester’s Mayo’s Hospital
Through the efforts of an English physician named William Worrall Mayo who arrived in the city on 1863 and the sisters of St. Francis, the now
known Mayo’s Hospital was established on 1883. They decided to establish the hospital because of some killer tornado months before who slayed 24 people and injuring almost a hundred ones. Mayo’s become Rochester’s first medical facility. In the beginning, it was only Dr. Mayo and his son which is also a physician that is administering and addressing the patients’ need.
Due to their dedication and perseverance, the Dr. Mayo and his son was joined by other medical specialist years after. They began expanding the hospital, building new facilities, laboratories, purchasing new equipment and
acquiring new medical knowledge. Today, it is the company that holds the greatest employment within the city with its more than 30,000 employees.
How IBM Began Its Rochester Quest
Another company that helped shaped Rochester’s economic stability is the IBM or the International Business Machines. IBM Rochester’s campus was
founded by IBM’s President Thomas J. Watson, Jr in honor of his friend Leland Fiegel which is a resident of Rochester before he died. The IBM in Rochester began operating in 1958. After years of working, IBM produced numerous patents such as the System I series, blue gene prototype and some phase of the roadrunner. They have accomplished it in Rochester. Today, IBM employs more than 2000 Rochester technicians and specialists.
Being one of the cities with the greatest potentials, Rochester is continuously creating its name in the scene. In 2014, the city holds 99% of its residents in the urban area and 1% in the rural with a total of 111,402
residents. Its estimated median household income in 2015 $66,340. Its estimated per capita income in the same year reached up to $35,105. Comparably, it was only $24,811 in 2000 which implies that its economy is continuously growing.
